World Plumbing Day

In Praise of Plumbers

On World Plumbing Day (March 11) it’s worth taking the time to think about how important plumbers are.  No, we’re not going to boast that some famous actor or rock star was briefly a plumber’s assistant in their youth so that that real plumbers can bask in some reflected glory.  The truth is that the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Michael Caine should have kept at plumbing if they really wanted to make a difference in the world.

Toilet Humour

Our idea of an actor worth his salt is Shane Jacobson, whose portrayal of Kenny with his unashamed love of portable toilets gladdened the hearts of those who know that no major event anywhere in the country could go ahead without them.  If not for the plumbers, there can be no stage for the rock icons.

Plumbing Saves Lives

There is no doubt that plumbing saves lives.  Proper sanitation and a supply of clean drinking water means that untold millions of people have avoided disease. Plumbing engineers ensure that the temperature is high enough in your hot water tank to make it impossible for legionella bacteria to thrive.  And modern plumbing automatically regulates the temperature of your hot water so that small children don’t get scalded and you don’t have the hassle of adjusting taps.

Taken for Granted

It’s only when things go wrong that most people realise just how vital plumbers are to the amenity they take for granted. A blocked toilet is a serious matter.  Speaking of amenity, give thanks to plumbers for the simple trap such as you can see under your kitchen sink that retains some water and seals the system against vermin and doesn’t allow the smell of sewage gas to permeate your home.

All Down to Plumbers

Plumbers don’t just work with water.  They also install and maintain the gas pipes that make it so easy for many of us to cook and keep warm in winter. You would be hard pressed to find another profession of such practical problem solvers whose work so obviously benefits everyone.   Just think today of how many times a plumber has made things possible from your morning shower to washing up the dishes from the evening meal.   Kevin McCloud from “Grand Designs” had it right when he said, “Without sanitation, there is no civilization.”  It’s all down to plumbers.
