Step 1. Identify the type of heater that you currently have

Step 2. Check the date of manufacture to see if the unit is still under warranty with the manufacture – this is not always readable but is usually on the side of the hot water system or sometimes behind the front cover plate on gas storage units.

Step 3. Is the water leaking from the tank or cylinder?

Step 4. Is the water leaking from a valve or pipework around the system?

Step 5. Turn off the water supply to the hot water system- there is usually a tap with a round black knob which will turn the water off going to the unit. If you cannot find this or it will not turn off you can turn the main water meter off which is normally located at front of property and provides water to the whole house.

Step 6. If your hot water system is electric, solar electric boosted or heat pump turn off the circuit breaker or fuse in your hot water system meter board. If it is not labelled or you are unsure you can always turn off the main switch until one of our Jim’s technician arrives.

Step 7. Gas hot water systems should have the gas isolation valve to the hot water heater turned off. Turn the duo valve with the black knob to the off position which will isolate your water- this way the gas and water has been turned off to the leaking unit. If either of these taps do not work you can turn off your gas meter and water meter to the whole house until one of our hot water technicians arrive.

For instantaneous or continuous flow gas hot water systems there is normally a quarter turn gas valve with a handle that can be used to turn gas off to the appliance.
