Last Saturday afternoon Jims Plumbing was called out to repair the pictured Rheem 135 litre gas internal hot water heater.
The customer had just returned home from taking the kids to sport and showers were needed pronto!
Rheem 135 litre Gas Internal Model; 300135
Unfortunately there was no hot water coming out of the taps or shower. The customer called 1300 068 480 and a plumber was organised to attend straight away.
Today on this unit, the plumber had the simple task of replacing the hot pressure relief valve which is the brass valve that you can see in the picture, sitting on the side of the tank.
The purpose of the hot pressure relief valve is when the hot water is heated within the cylinder, there is room for the water to discharge because when you heat water, water expands and without this valve the cylinder would likely rupture. The valve has a copper pipe running to a drain so that when water is discharged through the hot relief valve it is drained away rather than wetting the floor of the laundry where this unit is positioned.
The Rheem hot water heater, model 300135 is a 135L gas storage unit is designed to be installed internally within the house and not outside. As you can see on top of the unit there is a flue that omits any poisonous gases out through the roof and out into the atmosphere, so there is no danger to anyone in the house.
We find these units are not installed very often, particularly in new homes or units as hot water systems are normally located external to the house.
Although not always possible, it is preferable to have the hot water service located outside of the property. Not only does it make it more accessible, but it does not make a mess inside the house on the chance it ruptures and leaks. Plus many customers prefer to use the space inside for other purposes, such as storage rather than be taken up by a hot water service.
The customer in this instance was very thankful that we were not only able to attend within the hour, but was also able to diagnose the issue quickly, and fix it straight away. We always ensure we carry an extensive amount spare parts and materials so that we don’t need to go searching at a suppliers, particularly when the job is a simple fix.
